Reserved, a bit stoic and a little shy Cherokee is a good girl who doesn’t feel it’s necessary to be extra animated all of the time. But her reserved shy nature is only a mask. She’s incredibly sweet and very affectionate with everyone she meets once she’s comfortable. She simply chooses not to be a bubbly and bouncy dog. This serious girl is also fantastic with every dog she’s met. Shes a bit more forward with those intros but is just super happy to meet new canine friends. Cherokees more serious demeanor was the perfect fit to pair down the enthusiastic energy of a few of the younger dogs at Tehachapi State prison so she’s joining the ranks on A yard!

Cherokee was picked up as a stray by our county shelter. She waited a month hoping her family would claim her and when no one came she held out hope that an adopter would give her a chance. With so many other stray dogs hoping for the same thing she didn’t stand a chance. Sadly so many shepherds never make it out of public shelters alive. There are too many of them and not enough people willing to adopt. But we saw Cherokee and despite her initial shyness we saw the calm good girl we knew she would be. Cherokee is getting her 2nd chance in Pawsitive Change and we’re hopeful the perfect family will appreciate her energy level and give her a fantastic home.

Cherokee will be spending the next several months training at Tehachapi prison. They’ll be working on boosting her confidence and giving her skills most adopters want. While training she’ll be searching for the perfect adoptive home. A home willing to give her time to be comfortable so she can be the sweet, affectionate girl we all know. Think you have that home? Please apply today and give Cherokee the family she’s been waiting to find!

Here’s what you need to know about adopting a cat or dog from Marley’s Mutts:

  • Each adoptable pet will be introduced on Facebook
  • Each pet will have its own profile here on the website
  • All pets will be spayed or neutered
  • All pets will be micro-chipped and shots will be up-to-date
  • Each pet has their own application to complete—make sure you use the right one (linked from their bio)

It’s important to us that each pet goes not just to a great home but to the “right” home. Our foster parents work with each pet to get to know them and their needs.

We try hard to list all of the pertinent info about each pet on the site so you can choose the pet that will fit with your family/lifestyle. If you don’t see a specific pet on the site, he/she is not ready for adoption. Please be patient and wait until the bio is listed. We don’t decide on a “first come, first served” basis but rather on a “who’s the very best fit.” So, don’t panic.

It’s not a quick process. We receive dozens of applications for each pet so please be patient. If you’re shortlisted you’ll be contacted as soon as possible.

If selected to meet one of our pets and you currently have pets, you’ll be asked to do an in-person pet intro; we don’t do the long-distance adoption thing. If you live out of town, plan a fun road trip to meet the pet in person.

Don’t be discouraged if your application is not selected. Remember, we get a lot of them! Trust us, the best fit for you is coming.

If you’re lucky and you do adopt a super amazing pet from Marley’s Mutts, don’t ever hesitate to reach out to us for training, medication, or behavior questions. We’re here for you, and your pet.
