Looking for that perfect low rider lap dog? Well then you have to meet Basil. He’s as long as he is low and those initial moments of shyness disappear pretty quickly when human affection is involved. He’s an absolute lover and basks in the glow of any amount of human affection. He basically lives for the kindness people are willing to give and wants nothing more than to curl up in any lap available. He’s a doll and believe it or not this sweet boy almost didn’t make it out of the shelter alive.
Basil, like so many Kern County dogs, was picked up as a stray. He was found in the rural area of Arvin all by himself. His shyness was more pronounced in the shelter environment and this meant he didn’t “show well”. Not showing well is basically a death sentence as most adopters gravitate towards the instantly social dogs who run up to the kennel doors. Basil hung back scared and uncertain and people just walked on by. Sadly after he’d been at the shelter for 3 weeks Basil was euthanasia listed. But one of our fosters had seen him the week before and she was smitten. Not only did she see the sweet boy he was too scared to show at the shelter she knew he didn’t deserve to die and so Basil’s life was saved with her yes and he’s quickly settled into life in foster care.
While the shelter had him listed as a terrier cross we don’t really know what Basils breed heritage is. He kinda looks like an adorable blend of dachshund, Australian shepherd and who knows what else. At 26lbs he’s pretty much the perfect size and he totally fits in most laps perfectly. Basil loves dogs his size and smaller but is afraid of the bigger guys. He also does well with confident cats but will chase cats that are scared and that run from him. He’s house trained and just the best little dude. If you’re looking for that perfect pint size buddy Basil would really love to meet you! We can guarantee you’ll have a hard time not falling instantly in love.

Here’s what you need to know about adopting a cat or dog from Marley’s Mutts:
- Each adoptable pet will be introduced on Facebook
- Each pet will have its own profile here on the website
- All pets will be spayed or neutered
- All pets will be micro-chipped and shots will be up-to-date
- Each pet has their own application to complete—make sure you use the right one (linked from their bio)
It’s important to us that each pet goes not just to a great home but to the “right” home. Our foster parents work with each pet to get to know them and their needs.
We try hard to list all of the pertinent info about each pet on the site so you can choose the pet that will fit with your family/lifestyle. If you don’t see a specific pet on the site, he/she is not ready for adoption. Please be patient and wait until the bio is listed. We don’t decide on a “first come, first served” basis but rather on a “who’s the very best fit.” So, don’t panic.
It’s not a quick process. We receive dozens of applications for each pet so please be patient. If you’re shortlisted you’ll be contacted as soon as possible.
If selected to meet one of our pets and you currently have pets, you’ll be asked to do an in-person pet intro; we don’t do the long-distance adoption thing. If you live out of town, plan a fun road trip to meet the pet in person.
Don’t be discouraged if your application is not selected. Remember, we get a lot of them! Trust us, the best fit for you is coming.
If you’re lucky and you do adopt a super amazing pet from Marley’s Mutts, don’t ever hesitate to reach out to us for training, medication, or behavior questions. We’re here for you, and your pet.
