Coconut’s story is one of resilience, healing, and learning to trust again.

When Coconut arrived at Kern County Animal Services in early May, she was in heartbreaking condition. It was clear she had spent years surviving on the streets. Her coat was so severely matted that it had formed thick dreadlocks across her body, and she was covered in more puncture wounds than we could count. Her neck, belly, armpits, and feet were badly injured, requiring her entire body to be shaved so that her wounds could be properly cleaned and begin the healing process.

Just as visible as her physical injuries was her fear. When we brought Coconut home and introduced her to our pack, she was absolutely terrified. Rather than engage with the other dogs, she would immediately roll onto her back and expose her belly, hoping to avoid any conflict. It was clear that life had taught her to expect the worst.

Over the last month, however, Coconut has undergone an incredible transformation.

She has become a beloved member of our pack, forming especially close bonds with Cora Rose and Blackjack. Her confidence grows a little more each day. She is now completely potty trained, walks beautifully by our side, and has become such a trusted companion that she often accompanies us without a leash, choosing to stay right beside her people.

One of Coconut’s favorite places to be is curled up with my daughters. Most nights, she sleeps peacefully in my oldest daughter’s bed, a far cry from the frightened dog who first arrived at our home.

Like all great dogs, Coconut has a few charming quirks. She loves being carried, enjoys dressing up in the little outfits we put on her, and seems especially fascinated by her own reflection. When she’s wearing one of her dresses—which also help protect her healing skin—you can often find her staring proudly at herself in the mirror.

We estimate Coconut to be around seven or eight years old. While her past may have been difficult, she has embraced every opportunity to move forward. She is affectionate, gentle, loyal, and eager to be part of a family.

I have grown deeply attached to this little girl and could not be more proud of the courage she has shown. Every day, Coconut chooses trust over fear, and that has been one of the greatest gifts to witness.

Whoever is lucky enough to adopt Coconut won’t just be getting a wonderful dog—they’ll be welcoming home a true survivor.

Here’s what you need to know about adopting a cat or dog from Marley’s Mutts:

  • Each adoptable pet will be introduced on Facebook
  • Each pet will have its own profile here on the website
  • All pets will be spayed or neutered
  • All pets will be micro-chipped and shots will be up-to-date
  • Each pet has their own application to complete—make sure you use the right one (linked from their bio)

It’s important to us that each pet goes not just to a great home but to the “right” home. Our foster parents work with each pet to get to know them and their needs.

We try hard to list all of the pertinent info about each pet on the site so you can choose the pet that will fit with your family/lifestyle. If you don’t see a specific pet on the site, he/she is not ready for adoption. Please be patient and wait until the bio is listed. We don’t decide on a “first come, first served” basis but rather on a “who’s the very best fit.” So, don’t panic.

It’s not a quick process. We receive dozens of applications for each pet so please be patient. If you’re shortlisted you’ll be contacted as soon as possible.

If selected to meet one of our pets and you currently have pets, you’ll be asked to do an in-person pet intro; we don’t do the long-distance adoption thing. If you live out of town, plan a fun road trip to meet the pet in person.

Don’t be discouraged if your application is not selected. Remember, we get a lot of them! Trust us, the best fit for you is coming.

If you’re lucky and you do adopt a super amazing pet from Marley’s Mutts, don’t ever hesitate to reach out to us for training, medication, or behavior questions. We’re here for you, and your pet.
