Meet Marley.

At nearly 100 pounds, Marley is equal parts Labrador, Pit Bull, and oversized lap dog. He has a giant head, an even bigger heart, and absolutely no understanding of personal space.

In many ways, Marley is the quintessential Marley’s Mutts dog.

Not just because of his name, but because dogs like him are exactly why this organization exists.

Large bully-breed dogs are among the most overlooked animals in our shelter system. They often wait the longest, face the steepest odds, and are frequently passed over simply because of their size or breed. Very few rescue organizations in Kern County take dogs like Marley, and across California, that list isn’t much longer.

Yet dogs like Marley are often the very best of us.

He’s affectionate, loyal, goofy, gentle, and completely devoted to people. The kind of dog who thinks every visitor came specifically to see him. The kind of dog who would gladly trade his dignity for a belly rub.

And every time I look at him, I’m reminded of another Marley.

Back in 2002, I rescued a dog named Marley from the Mojave Animal Shelter. At the time, I had no idea that dog would change the trajectory of my life.

That Marley helped save me.

He inspired me to start volunteering at the shelter. He opened my eyes to the incredible animals waiting behind kennel doors. He taught me about unconditional love, second chances, and purpose. That journey eventually led to the creation of Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue.

Without Marley, there would be no Marley’s Mutts.

So when I see this big yellow blockhead sitting beside me, I can’t help but think about where it all began.

The truth is, our ranch is filled with dogs just like him.

Dogs who have been overlooked.

Dogs who have been underestimated.

Dogs who simply need someone willing to see beyond their size, their breed, or their past.

Every single day, our staff pours their hearts into caring for these animals. They provide food, medical care, training, enrichment, and most importantly, hope. They remind these dogs that they matter and that their story isn’t over yet.

But we can’t do it without you.

Today, I’m asking for your help.

Whether you choose to adopt, foster, volunteer, share our dogs’ stories, or make a donation, your support helps us continue saving dogs like Marley and the many others waiting patiently for their chance.

Because every dog deserves someone who believes in them.

And sometimes, all it takes is one dog to change a life.

Thank you for standing with us, believing in second chances, and helping us continue this work. We are grateful for every one of you.
